Investigation of Atomic and Molecular Clusters Formed in Free Jet Expansions via Gas Phase Nucleation.

Abstract

The goal of the work outlined here is to determine the structure of atomic and molecular clusters small enough to constitute the starting or critical size for phase transitions from the vapor state (i.e., 10-100 molecules/cluster). The clusters are nucleated homogeneously from the vapor phase in the free jet expansion of a molecular beam apparatus. Their size and structure are obtained through use of high energy electron diffraction.
