Concerning the Structure of the Valence Zone of Chalcopyrite-Type Bonds,

Abstract

Compatibility relationships are found for the representations of groups (T sub d, sup 2) and (D sub 2d, sup 12). With the aid of these relationships, changes in the structure of the valence zone are analyzed for the transition from valence crystals with the sphalerite (ZnS) lattice to those with the chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) lattice. On the assumption that this change is small (in some sense), the peak structure of the valence zone is investigated for crystals of the chalcopyrite type. In recent years complex compounds possessing semiconductor properties have attracted a great deal of attention. Compounds with a tetragonal arrangement of neighboring atoms (as in Ge and Si) occupy a prominent place among them. It is therefore of interest to conduct a theoretic group investigation of energy bands for the sequence of structures Ge-ZnS-CuFeS2.
