Observations of Carbon Recombination Line Emission in the Reflection Nebula M78 (16),

Abstract

The C116 (alpha) and C142 (alpha) recombination lines have been detected in the reflection nebula M78. The line emission arises in a cold T approximately equal 20K CII Stromgren sphere ionized by HD38563N and S, the exciting stars of M78 that are embedded in the dark cloud L1630. The observed lines are extremely narrow, the full width at half maximum delta V < 1.3 km/s, making these the narrowest radio recombination lines yet detected.
