A Continuation of Laboratory Studies of VLF Propagation Effects in the Simulated Disturbed Sub-D Region.

Abstract

Ion collision frequencies and ion removal rates due to ion- ion recombination have been deduced from mass spectrometer and conductivity probe measurements in the afterglow of laboratory plasmas produced by high-energy electron bombardment of airlike N2:O2 mixtures at ionospheric pressures. Previous work has shown that the ion species and reaction rates determined from this laboratory plasma are in general agreement with those observed in the ionosphere. The results obtained in this work are relevant to the calculation of VLF and ELF skywave propagation in a disturbed ionosphere.
