Electroslag Casting of Forged Ingots,

Abstract

The principles of electroslag remelting have been applied to the casting of forged ingots. Several electroslag casting systems are described. The optimum slag consists of CaO, Al2O3, and CaF2. Desulfurization is considerably improved by the proper choice of slag and metal temperatures. A corundum slab, floating on top of the liquid metal and below the slag layer, breaks up the stream of liquid metal into small drops. The short riser-heating program, involving a two-stage shrinkage-fill process, provides best results.
