Modification of the AAD-7 Tracking Control System and the Rate Coincidence Gate for the AC-130 Gunships

Abstract

Two problem areas of the AC-130E gunships were investigated and corrected during deployment to Southeast Asia. Modifications were to the AAD-7 (forward looking infra-red sensor) tracking control system. These modifications improved the tracking ability of the sensor operator and reduced an undesirable vertical jitter. Modification was also made to the fire control computer program. New equations were programmed to better inhibit firing the guns during high aircraft attitude rates. These high rates would often cause large misses of the ordnance with respect to the target.
