USSR's Probes for Power and Position in the Middle East.

Abstract

The USSR now appears poised toward accommodating altered conditions under which future probes for power and position may be generated. For the next decade at least, the USSR may be expected to approach the Middle East with waning interest. Such a decline in interest would recognize the less than critical importance of the region to Moscow because of other more pressing needs or profitable opportunities elsewhere. Data were gathered using literature and periodicals as principal search sources. For the US, a 'retreat' by the USSR from the Middle East has serious implications, some which may transcend the possible initiatives which would open a revitalized American role in the region.
