Dynamic Method of Investigating the Stability of a Compressed Rod,

Abstract

Using the partial differential equation describing the vibration of a rod compressed by an axial force, the author obtains expressions for the critical force in the case of a rod fixed at one end and loaded at the other end by a follow-up force along the tangent to its axis, when the compressive forces acting on the rod are nonconservative. The author also obtains an approximate expression for the critical force based on a simplified version of the frequency equation with an approximate error of 2%.
