Spectral Emittance Measurements on Some Laser Window Materials.

Abstract

A cryogenic emittance spectrometer for measuring absorption coefficients in the 2.5 to 14 micrometer region is described. The spectrometer is modular in design and uses a liquid nitrogen-cooled circular variable filter (CVF) as the monochromator element. By using an electrically heated sample holder, temperature as well as frequency dependence of the absorption coefficient is obtained. Some representative spectra of high resistivity GaAs, CVD ZnSe, and RAP KCl are presented. GaAs appears to be at least partially dominated by multiphonon absorption near 10.6 micrometers, while both ZnSe and KCl show intrinsic loss mechanisms in this region at room temperature.
