Atmospheric Measurements at Millimeter Wavelengths.

Abstract

The study addresses the problem of measuring meteorological parameters by virtue of the natural thermal emission of the atmosphere at millimeter wavelengths. Three topics are discussed. First, the oxygen absorption coefficients are computed using a foreign gas approach based on the liouville space formulation. Numerical results were obtained for pure oxygen with rotation quantum number N = 1 through N = 11 for T = 300K. Second, the joint use of the 60 GHz and 118 GHz oxygen resonances for determining cloud water content and altitude distribution is discussed, and finally the 118 GHz receiver for measuring the 118 GHz atmospheric spectrum is described.
