Computer Analysis of the Mass Spectra of Gas Mixtures.

Abstract

The report describes the development of a complex computer program package which can be used to solve the extremely difficult problem of analyzing gas mixtures, such as polymer pyralysis products, from their mass spectra. This program package can, using only digitized mass spectral data as input, find the peaks in each mass scan and perform a complete quantitative analysis of the gas mixture that gave rise to the spectrum. This analysis can now be accomplished quickly and accurately for the first time. It provides the basis for determining critically needed kinetics and mechanisms of polymer degradation. In addition, the program package has general applicability for compositional analysis of gaseous systems and for spectral peak finding.
