Delay of Gratification: Review and Suggestions for Future Research.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, a review is made of existing theory and research on the determinants of one's ability to delay gratification in receiving an immediately available reward in order to receive a larger reward later. Three major research directions are described: the personality and sociocultural correlates of delaying immediate satisfaction, the ways of modifying existing delay preferences, and the effects of cognitive-attentional mechanisms upon waiting. The second section deals with applying further psychological concepts to the research context.
