The early history of ionospheric investigations in the US from the first suggestion of its existence by Kennelly to the initial data procured with rockets, is outlined. A tabulation of the earlier groups and organizations in this field is followed by brief historical outlines of the work in certain technological and scientific areas. The report is concluded with an enumeration of several of the ionospherically related US activities following the early 1950's.
