Optimization of Microcode for Horizontally Encoded Microprogrammable Computers.

Abstract

The various levels of microprogramming languages are categorized, and the problems specific to the efficient compilation of microcode for horizontal architectures are considered. A general model of the compilation and optimization processes is developed, and techniques are suggested for treating the optimization process as a number of distinct phases. Where analytic solutions are not feasible, heuristic techniques are suggested.
