Meso-Scale and Small-Scale Interactions on Global Climate. Volume II. Radiation Transport Effects on Global Climate

Abstract

The report summarizes the three-year research program at Systems, Science and Software to investigate the effects of meso-scale and small-scale interactions on global climate. The research concentrated on two areas, orographic effects on the wind patterns and effects of radiation transport on the climate. Volume II describes the radiation transport research which produced a benchmark code against which more simplified models can be compared. The code, ATRAD, is characterized by high angular and frequency resolutions and by the ability to calculate radiative atmospheric heating rates taking into account molecular absorption and scattering from arbitrary distributions of aerosols and particulates.
