Contribution to the Chemistry of Antarctic Snow: Determination of Trace Elements at the PPB Level by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (Contribution a la Chimie des Neiges de l'Antarctique Determination d'Dlements Traces au Niveau PPB Par Spectrometrie d'Absorption Atomique),
Abstract
The composition of the impurities contained in Antarctic snow has yet to be established. This work is based primarily on the study of geographical variations and on the establishment of a fallout table, backed up by some observations as to the identification of the various possible origins. Analysis by atomic absorption spectrometry of the elements sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium and iron is performed as well as analysis by neutron activation of the elements chlorine, sodium, and manganese. Sampling procedures and sample preparation, as well as analytical techniques, are discussed.
