The Freedom of Information Act - 5 U.S.C. Sec. 552. Summaries of Cases, 1967-1974.

Abstract

The document provides an informal summary of Freedom of Information Act cases brought before the courts during the years 1967 to near the end of 1974. Though researched and written by a practicing attorney, deliberate effort was made throughout to present the cases summarized in layman's language. Highly complex or technical legal terms have been, wherever possible, simplified so as to make the basis issues involved readily understandable. Brief, one-page summaries of the cases and the court decisions are presented in roughly chronological order commencing with the year 1967. This report is intended for use by the Army Action Officers charged with responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act as amended in 1974. It is instructional in nature, designed to acquaint action officers with trends that the courts have thus far taken in interpretation of this act. Accordingly, it should not be used to cite legal precedent or argument. The report includes a table of contents, an alphabetical index, and a subject index.
