A New Look at Suez.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the international economic, political, and strategic implications of a reopened and enlarged Suez Canal. Issues to be considered include a Soviet naval buildup in the Indian Ocean; future Arab-Israeli confrontations; altered international trade patterns; world petroleum requirements; the growth of Egypt as a moderate leader in the Arab world and as a key nation in US foreign policy; and, finally, the role of the Third World, particularly Africa and the Middle East, in future balances of power and as resource bases for the future. Analysis is oriented toward the relationship of these factors to US security requirements.
