Fail-Safe Oil-in-Water Monitor Development.
Abstract
This report first describes the study conducted to determine the best technique for detection of small quantities of oil-in-water. It then outlines the theoretical basis for the detection of oil using the methylene group absorption characteristics. The report then describes the experimental model sensor proposed to solve the detection problem and ends with a description and evaluation of the experimental model actually fabricated. Essential elements of this system are described in detail. Evaluation of the experimental model sensor showed that its capability was limited to detection of several parts per million. This was not due to the detection concept, but rather to the mechanical-electronic interface. The system is considerably more susceptible to low frequency variations in the light path than was expected.
