Stored Blood Function.

Abstract

The research elucidates the role of blood factors in controlling retinal metabolism and circulation. Using isolated bovine eyes perfused with fresh and stored whole blood, the authors have determined that the diameter of retinal vessels is altered by changes in p02, pC02, or pH. This change occurs within five minutes after one of the three parameters is varied and it reaches its maximum in ten minutes. Once the blood parameter is returned to its original level, the vessel diameter also returns to its original size.
