Development of Optical Coatings for High-Intensity Laser Applications.

Abstract

Optical coatings for high-intensity 10.6 micrometer laser applications have been developed. Three applications were examined: single-layer protective coatings for KCl and NaCl window, two-layer antireflectance coatings for KCl and NaCl windows, and multilayer high-reflectance coatings for Ge beamsplitters. Good results were obtained for As2S3 as a protective coating on NaCl and KCl and (Ge/ZnS) as a multilayer stack n on Ge. Coating deposition techniques are described in some detail as are experimental techniques for spectrophotometric analysis of coating optical properties, calorimetric measurements of absorptance at 10.6 micrometers, and laser damage measurements using CW, 10.6 micrometers radiation.
