Repeated Inspection, A Solution to Extra High Quality Problems.

Abstract

This paper introduces a method for determining the best repeated inspection plan for improving quality in those applications requiring higher quality than can reasonably be produced. The history of quality control is first discussed in order to show that the development of repeated inspection plans to meet the ever higher quality demands of space age technology is a logical extention. Then, a cost model is developed in terms of costs of inspection, rejection, and failure to detect defects. From this, a cost equation is derived and applied to an example case to show its workability. The example case is solved using an iterative search computer program. The solution indicates where to inspect and how many times. Results suggest that the repeated inspection approach is meaningful and well worth pursuing further. Finally, the results of the study are summarized and recommendations made for further investigation and development.
