Optical Strain Recording. Analysis of Strain Histories in Structures.

Abstract

A new system for measuring strain on the whole-field basis is described for aircraft. The system in its present form enables in-service strain monitoring to be carried out more thoroughly than before. The report analyses the need for a whole-field method of strain monitoring, and discusses both the drawbacks of established techniques, and the advantages to be gained from the use of a service-compatible multiplied moire' system. The methods of site operation and optical processing are described with examples.
