Investigation of Ion-ion Recombination Cross Sections.

Abstract

An experimental and theoretical investigation of ion-ion mutual neutralization was made. Two-body neutralization rates were measured for NO(+) + O2(-), N2(+) + NO2(-), and N(+) + O(-) over the energy range from above 10 eV to 0.15 eV, and the results extrapolated and thermally averaged to yield reaction rates at 300K. In addition, preliminary measurements were obtained on O(+) + OH(-) and NO(+) + OH(-)-H2O, and a few data obtained on N2(+) + OH(-)-H2O. An investigation of excited states in ion beams did not reveal the presence of any such states, but did allow measurements of electron loss cross sections for O(-), O2(-), NO2(-) and NO3(-) on a variety of atoms and molecules at energies from 1 to 4 keV. The theoretical program has been directed toward understanding the processes by which clustered ions are neutralized. The most favorable process is orbital capture of one ion by the other due to coulomb excitation of the internal degrees of freedom of the clusters. A variety of calculations were performed on the neutralization of NO(+) by O(-).
