The Doppler-Shift Laser Anemometer.
Abstract
A brief review is given of the laser anemometer as it applies to the measurement of flow velocity and turbulence in a fluid. It is shown that the fluid velocity can be obtained from the intensity correlation function which is the the Fourier transform of the intensity power spectrum. The technique of signal clipping is used to economize on equipment requirements and the relations are given between the true and clipped correlation functions for several cases of interest. Feasibility is shown for measuring the fluid flow parameters for a free jet. Additional experiments and analyses would be necessary before the anemometer system can be used as an accurate diagnostic probe for turbulent fluids.
