Mosquitoes of Middle America.
Abstract
The project 'Mosquitoes of Middle America' is concerned with detailed studies on the systematics, bionomics, distribution and vector potential of the mosquitoes of Central America, West Indies and adjacent portions of North America and South America. Its principal objective is to provide basic biological data needed for the rational control of mosquito-borne diseases in these areas. During calendar year 1974 no field work was accomplished by the staff but arrangements were made to initiate a topotypic survey of mosquitoes originally described from Brazil. Good progress was made in the preparation of previously collected material in processing 1898 collections, with the preparation of 5,292 slides of individual rearings, 1349 slides of male genitalia, 1543 slides of whole larvae, 143 slides of adults, 3212 pin mounts of adults and the labeling of 9,500 adult mounts and 500 slides. Seventy plates of final illustrations were prepared. Preliminary taxonomic examination was made for 15 groups of mosquitoes in preparation for detailed studies. Preparation of the manuscripts for the revisions of the composite genus Trichoprosopon and for the scapularis group of Aedes (Ochlerotatus) were begun. Some progress was made on the study of the mosquito fauna of the West Indies.
