Evaluation of the Rexco-H and Rexco-Hep Reactor Excursion Containment Codes.

Abstract

The REXCO-H and REXCO-HEP Reactor EXcursion COtainment codes have been developed by Argonne National Laboratory. These codes analyze the response of the primary containment system of a liquid metal fast breeder reactor to a core disassembly accident (CDA). REXCO-H analyzes the Hydrodynamic response, and REXCO-HEP analyzes the Hydrodynamic and Elastic-Plastic response. The author has completed an extensive and detailed analysis of the theory and the programming of the REXCO-H containment code, Release 2, and of the REXCO-HEP containment code, Release 1. This report presents the findings of this investigation: several programming errors have been discovered and corrected; the effects of the inherent shortcomings in the programmed models are discussed; suggestions are made for future improvements; and evaluations are given for the individual sections of the codes and for each code as a whole.
