Some Practical Aspects of the Treatment of Ill-Posed Problems by Regularization.

Abstract

Ill-posed mathematical problems arise in many areas of applied science and engineering of interest to the Air Force. Among these are numerical differentiation, system identification, space object identification, and determination of polymer molecular weight distributions. This report provides a fairly comprehensive introduction to the analysis of regularizable ill-posed problems. Several specific solution techniques are examined and compared in the light of a representative example, and some general solution methods are described.
