Factors Influencing Attrition in the Marine Corps

Abstract

In this paper contingency table analysis is used to assess the impact of a large number of predictor variables on the probability of a Marine completing his service contract. The application of this statistical methodology is particularly appropriate where the predictor variables are discrete as is the case in this study. Two factors, educational attainment and length of enlistment, are identified as having substantial impact on retention. Several policy implications of the findings are also discussed.
