Investigation of ASTM D 2887 Test Method for Use with Aircraft Turbine Engine Fuels.

Abstract

Equations for estimating the results of ASTM D 86, Test for Distillation of Petroleum Products, from measurements of ASTM D 2887, Test for Boiling Range Distribution of Petroleum Fractions by Gas Chromatography, are presented. The equations have generated using a step-wise regression analysis method to obtain the greatest reduction in the error sum of squares. Equations are presented for wide-cut fuels only (JP-4 and Jet B), kerosene type fuels (JP-5, Jet A, and Jet A-1), and for both wide-cut and kerosene fuels together. An attempt was also made to calculate selected bulk fuel properties using D 2887 test data and other measured fuel properties. The API gravity, volume percent aromatics, freezing point, and either Reid vapor pressure or flash point were examined.
