Potential of Linear Space Optimization Techniques in Solving Problems of Allocation of Search Effort.

Abstract

This report demonstrates the potential of linear space optimization techniques in solving problems of allocation of search effort. First, a simple problem is formulated. This problem is then examined with the well-known technique of Lagrange multipliers; the limitations of this approach are outlined. The Fenchel duality theorem is then stated and used to overcome the limitations of Lagrange multipliers.
