Rigidly Rotating Liquids in Closed Partially-Filled Cylindrical Cavities.

Abstract

This report presents a compilation of formulas for the following properties of a rigidly rotating liquid in a closed, partially-filled rectangular cylinder: (1) shape and location of the free surface, (2) location of the center of mass of the liquid, (3) moment of inertia and angular momentum of the liquid about the axis of the cylinder, (4) pressure distribution in the liquid, and (5) moment of inertia about a central transverse axis in the base of the cylinder. Six parameters are required: height and diameter of the cylinder, angular velocity of the cylinder, density of the fluid, precentage of fill, and gravitational or deceleration force per unit mass. Plots in non-dimensional form are presented for these quantities.
