Preliminary Investigation of the Monthly and Seasonal Variation of Total Mass of the Atmosphere of the Northern Hemisphere and Its Possible Use as a Partial Measure of Water Vapor Content Change of the Atmosphere,
Abstract
It has been found possible to determine, partially, the monthly and seasonal variations of water vapor content changes in the atmosphere of the Northern Hemisphere by the use of monthly mean surface pressure. As an important sideline of this investigation, it was found that the monthly mean surface pressure anomalies over low latitude oceanic regions indicate the anomalies in uptake of water vapor (evaporation) and in its distribution, from which the transport of water vapor to higher latitudes and continents can be estimated. The distribution of these anomalies on weekly and biweekly time scales is expected to become a useful tool in medium-range weather forecasting.
