Analysis of the Response of a Conductor Immersed in an EMP Source Region-the Steady State.

Abstract

This report addressed the problem of a conducting body immersed in air and illuminated by a gamma-ray flux. In this EMP source coupling region, the charge, the current, and the field at the conducting body are of interest. A scheme was formulated for solving this problem by carefully decomposing the interaction into its various basic aspects concerning the effects of the incident gamma-rays only, of the driving Compton electron current, and of the ionized air conductivity. The effects are examined both separately and in combination. The author solves a simple case involving an infinitely-conducting and infinitely-dense spheroidal conductor illuminated by a 'steady' stream of gamma-rays. This solution provides physical insights into the EMP source region effects and illustrates the scheme of theoretical analysis for more complex problems. Numerical results are developed for illustrative high altitude EMP exposures. Finally, a scheme is outlined to solve the time-dependent problem by extending the above method.
