Theory of Charge Transfer Electrochemical Interfaces: A Review.

Abstract

This report reviews the considerable progress made over the past decade in the development of theoretical aspects of the elementary acts of both electron and proton transfer at metal electrode-electrolyte interfaces. Specific theoretical treatments reviewed in some detail include: (1) Outer sphere electron transfer: the Marcus-Hush and Levich-Dogonadze-Kuznetsov treatments and modifications of such (Schmidt, Schmickler-Vielstich, Kestner-Logan-Jortner); (2) Bridge-assisted electron transfer: the treatment of the Dogonadze group; (3) Proton transfer: the activated complex approach with and without proton tunnelling (Brockris-Matthews, Conway-Salomon, Christov), BEBO approach (Salomon-Enke-Conway, Bockris-Sen); the non-equilibrium solvent polarization model (Dogonadze-Kuznetsov-Levich).
