Beamforming for Hydrophone Arrays by Means of Resistors and Operational Amplifiers,

Abstract

The report discusses a low cost method of beamforming for acoustic arrays. It uses mainly resistors and operational amplifiers. The operating frequency band ranges from DC to upward of 100 kHz. The method is presently used to produce 256 beams simultaneously, using the output voltages of a two-dimensional hydrophone array having 16 x 16 hydrophones. The discussion is nonmathematical and is intended to explain the principle. References for a detailed mathematical discussion are given.
