VLF Antenna Base Insulator Model Tests.

Abstract

The report summarizes an investigation of alternate base insulator designs for VLF transmitting antenna towers. The investigation encompassed three principal tasks: Measure the voltage distribution and capacitance of three candidate insulator designs under conditions which simulate the Lualualei, Hawaii and Anapolis, Maryland transmitting sites; Modify the three candidate designs by changing the configuration of corona shields and/or rain shields to attain an equal voltage distribution across multisection insulators; and Modify one or more designs for optimum rain protection, under the prevailing environmental conditions at the Lualualei site.
