Balloon Armament Test.

Abstract

The Balloon Armament Test was conducted by the Range Measurements Laboratory at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, on 22 and 23 May 1974, successfully demonstrating the feasibility of using a balloon system as the lifting device for a munitions high angle impact facility. A new all-weather, environmentally hardened 200,000 cubic foot balloon system with a triad tether system was used. The test was documented by photogrammetric and strip charts. Test data are presented to support the technical and operational feasibility of the Balloon Armament Test concept. A recommendation for a follow-on phase two test either at Eglin AFB, Florida or at the high angle impact facility, Sandia Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico, is contained in Appendix II of this report.
