Determination of the Absolute Intensity of the Sodium D2 Emission in Rocket Plumes.

Abstract

The spectral radiance of three rocket motors doped with zero, 0.1%, and 1.0% NaCl was measured at 5890A. The spectral radiance of the plume continuum in the Fraunhofer D2 absorption band was measured also. Since the spectral radiance of the plume only quadrupled with a ten fold increase in the fuel's sodium content, self absorption in the plume is thought to be a significant broadening mechanism. The lack of a change in the continuum radiance was verified with densitometric scans of movie film taken of the firings.
