Electrocaloric Refrigeration for Superconductors

Abstract

Several significant developments have occurred in the six month period since the previous Semi-Annual Technical Report. The most significant development was the discovery that SrTiO3 glass ceramics (FEL multilayer samples) showed only heating effects at 4K for both polarization and depolarization. At the same time, the pitting problem for ceramming temperatures above 1100C was partially solved. Development work on two types of heat switches was essentially completed. Several electrothermal measurements have been done on the SrTiO3 glass-ceramic samples to try to understand why they behave as they do. In addition an apparatus for measurement of DC polarization and hysteresis was completed.
