The Effect of Talc on the Barrel Life of a 20 mm Automatic Gun System.

Abstract

Barrel life tests were fired with the 20 mm, M39 Automatic Gun using a test schedule of a 200 round burst followed by complete cooling, the results indicate that the incorporation of small amounts of talc in the base grain of an extruded single base propellant increases barrel life. The largest increase in barrel life was obtained with the propellants containing 1/2% incorporated talc.
