Santa Barbara Convective Band Seeding Test Program. Phase II. 1970-73 Summary.

Abstract

The report presents the results (Phase II) of test-seeding convection bands in winter storms along the central and southern California coast. Both aerial and ground-based seeding were conducted on a randomized basis in approximately one half (44%) of the storms observed during the 1971-73 seasons. In addition, some test data from the 1970-71 season are included for the aerial seeding operations. The aerial seeding, using an AgI-NH4I-acetone solution, was conducted just west of Santa Barbara County with the nucleant being dispersed by a burner developed by the Naval Weapons Center. The primary mode of evaluation was by rainfall, with a test area of about 27,000 square kilometers containing 104 raingages available for analysis.
