Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis of Heavy Elements.

Abstract

Trace analysis of uranium and thorium in human urine in the part-per-million (ppm) range was explored by energy dispersive x-ray analysis. The previous system used for irradiation in a vacuum was redesigned to permit irradiation of solid and liquid samples in air. A focusing cathode electron gun in conjunction with a molybdenum transmission foil provided characteristic K x-rays for the irradiation of urine samples. The L x-rays from U and Th in the irradiated sample were then measured by an intrinsic germanium detector. Electron gun currents of 400 microamps at electron energies of 30 keV provided detection of Th at 0.1 ppm and U at 7 ppm. Samples were prepared by chemical precipitation and filtration onto millipore paper.
