A Comparative Evaluation of Machine Aided Indexing at the Defense Documentation Center vs the Manual Indexing Done by the NSWC/Dahlgren Laboratory Technical Library

Abstract

A study was made of the DDC Machine indexing system (MAI) using 551,1498s (WVIS) published from 1973/74. The 1498s are all on electronic sensors. The author indexed the 551 documents manually using the Uniterm System of Coordinate Indexing. Technical Information Specialist assisted with the indexing and final acceptance of answers. Questions submitted by users at NSWC/DL were run by DDC and the resulting print-outs were compared with the retrieved material from the author's files.
