The Synthesis of Icosahedral Nickelaboranes.

Abstract

The reaction of the organometallic reagents (c5H5)2Ni and (C5H5NiCO)2 with tetraalkylammonium salts of B11H13(2-) provides a convenient high yield route to the unknown icosahedral species, C5H5NiB11H11(-). The reaction of (C5H5NiCO)2 with the borane anion, B10H10(2-), results in insertions of two C5H5Ni-moieties into the polyhedral framework to produce the icosahedral metalloborane (C5H5Ni)2B10H10. The existence and great stabilities of these icosahedral nickelaboranes are predicted by polyhedral counting rules and furnish a pleasing example of the a priori predictive ability of these rules.
