Oceanology in Denmark

Abstract

In spite of the extremely maritime orientation and exposure of the Danish people, oceanography accounts for only a modest fraction (2% of scientists) of its research activity. The principal organizations carrying out this work are the Ministry of Defense (mine and antisubmarine related topics and hydrographic surveys), Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Greenland (primarily fisheries oriented activities), Ministry of Environmental Protection (pollution problems), the Ministry of Education (programs in University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark) and the Ministry of Public Works. Although the total budget is small they maintain an excellent reputation for work in shallow water environments, particularly the low salinity and strong mixing circumstances encountered on their European coasts and Arctic problems near Greenland.
