The Interaction of Radiation (Optical Absorption and Light Scattering) in Metals, Magnetic Semiconductors and Disordered Systems.

Abstract

The interaction of optical radiation (including optical absorption and Raman scattering) in metallic surfaces, magnetic semiconductors, dielectrics, mixed crystals and disordered systems have been studied both experimentally and theoretically Experimentally the achievements have stemmed from (1) The observation of Raman scattering from metallic materials and its enhancement in the vicinity of the plasma frequency particularly in magnetic semiconductors. (2) The results from various mixed crystals and disordered systems where good agreement was obtained with simple calculations based upon the REI-model. (3) Measurement of the dispersion of surface polaritons, resonance Raman scattering in semiconductors, and uniaxial stress studies. Finally the area of rotational optical activity in crystals has provided new information on these effects with temperature and pressure and the relation between piezooptical and thermo-optical properties of crystals.
