Runaway Escapement Redesign M125A1 Modular Booster

Abstract

An analytical investigation was conducted to determine the effect of friction on the modular version of the M125A1 Booster mechanism, a Safe and Arming Device which operates in a centrifugal force field created by a spinning projectile. The investigation uncovered two points of contact which were extremely sensitive to friction. Subsequent redesign using a simple friction loss math model and a computer program to analyze the escapement mesh resulted in a design which operated significantly smoother and started more readily. Both laboratory and ballistic tests verified that this new version met all timing and functioning requirements with a high degree of accuracy and reliability. It is anticipated that production of the new design in mass quantities will result in increased production yield and improved performance with no increase in cost.
