Mechanics of a Straight-Limbed Bow.

Abstract

The nonlinear elastic deformation of a straight-limbed bow is analyzed in this paper using the theory of elastica. Strain energy stored in the bow which can be converted to kinetic energy of the arrow is determined for different magnitude of pull. The effects of prestress in the bowstring on strain energy and on total draw are also included in the study.
