A Parallel-Channel Detection System.

Abstract

The report covers the development of a parallel-channel detection system (PCDS) for use in low light level spectroscopy. The PCDS consists of a three-stage image intensifier and an image isocon television camera. Fiber-optics coupling of the image intensifier to the camera and careful video processing have yielded quantum-limited sensitivity. Modifications to the basic detector have resulted in improvements in resolution, uniformity, and dynamic range. The data acquisition time for the current PCDS is approximately 100:1 less than that of a conventional photomultiplier tube detector. Tests are being conducted in order to completely characterize the operation of the PCDS and further improve its performance.
